Snippet | Battle of Britain Day | Second World War
Today in World War II: 15th September, 1940 was marked as 'Battle of Britain Day', as an air fight of paramount importance happened over the skies of London. Shortly after British expeditionary forces evacuating from Dunkirk, France, Hitler ordered for an amphibious (Air, Land, Sea) invasion of Britain. Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe (Air Force) was entrusted to begin the operation and to carry out relentless attacks on London. The sheer perseverance of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and its people, their Royal Air Force (RAF) launched an aggressive offensive attack and managed to shoot down many of Luftwaffe's fighter planes. This defeat was viewed as a serious blow to Nazi Germany's plan of Europe and world domination.
