Disruptor | Thevar and Nethaji | India's Independence Warriors | Piramalai Kallars

Even though, it is not in our control, seldom do, people are born and died on the same date. It is the choice no one can make. Nature knew he was an exception. Therefore, his birth and death needed to be remarkable. Perhaps the universe conspired hence he was born on October 30th, 1908 and died on his 55th birthday October 30th, 1963. In the time period of 55 years he biologically existed on earth as a bachelor not only did he disrupt the politics and culture of the state Tamilnadu but the national independence movement of India. Truly, a national hero.

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar (October 30, 1908 - October 30, 1963) was instrumental in the formation of Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army (INA) in southern India. October 30, 2019 marked his 112th anniversary. The people of our region still preserve the affection Thevar had on Nethaji, therefore our descendants are being named after Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose for generations.

For the affinity Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar had for Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose, we still name our descendants after him.

I'm a descendant of a 'Denotified Tribe' (DNT; Tamil: Kuttraparamarai), which is a misnomer. According to a study, we were the primitive humans migrated from Central Africa to Southern India, even before languages came into existence. After all, humans invariably lead nomadic existence.

At Usilampatti - Perungamanallur memorial of brave hearts. During the invasion of Madurai by English, we were independent, did not take their orders, denied paying taxes, when they forced us to be their slaves, we fought with bare hands,  " Vel Kambu ", and stones against English's guns. 16 of us were killed, we did not retreat. We continued to fight under the leadership of army led by Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose and Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar.

Staying true to the roots: Back in 2002, when i was the Madurai district, youth wing secretary of ' Annaithu Makkal Thevar Peravai', we went along with members of Coimbatore district to Pasumpon, to pay our respects for Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar on the occasion of ' Thevar jeyanthi '. Our homage was published in the daily Tamil newspaper "Dinamalar"

As far as Piramalai Kallars of Madurai and the followers of Bose are concerned, Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose is invariably the leader of pre and post independent India, not only because of Bose's camaraderie with Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar but for his courage in fighting the colonial rule in South East Asia.

Piramalai Kallars instinctively opposed authoritarianism and control.

"History is written by those who have hanged heroes." - Braveheart (1995).
A revolutionary freedom fighter who was not only synonymous with bravery and intelligence but social justice and equality.
It's time the history is recalled as it was.

He was instrumental in installing the life-size portrait of a freedom fighter, and a national leader "Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar" in the Indian Parliament, which was unveiled by the then President "Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam" in 2002. Not only is the "Mukkulathor/Thevar" community  indebted to "Dr.Subramanian Swamy", but every patriotic Indian as " Thevar" alongside "Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose" played a pivotal role in the Indian freedom struggle and fight against British, who is unfortunately been poised as a caste leader because of the vested interests of some, but indeed a national leader.

Had Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose been the first prime minister of India, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar would have possibly been the defense minister of India.
It was not only because of the camaraderie existed between them, but because had been instrumental in the freedom fight against British.

know the Father of India, "Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose", on the eve of 74th Republic Day!

Netaji Subash Chandra Bose was neither a secular nor a right winger but would aligned with ideologies, which could annihilate British.

A man of secrets, whose life and death remain shrouded in mystery.

Was Bose killed in a plane crash? Did Bose flee to Russia? Was Bose killed by KGB (Soviet Union Secret Service) on the instruction of Bose's erstwhile party members? Did Bose embrace fascist ideology? Was Bose secular?

Answers to the above questions, may increase your liking or disliking for Bose. This is what I interpreted based on the podcast by Chandrachur Ghose on his book "Bose: The Untold Story Of An Inconvenient Nationalist".

For Bose, India is first. Indian independence is of his primary concern. On attaining independence from English, India needs to be reconstructed. In order to accomplish this he would align with any ideology, which would help him liberate India from the British tyranny.

Bose fundamentally differed from Gandhi, who needed to transform humanity as a whole and withdraw non violence. However, Bose was of the view that what it takes to achieve freedom will be adopted. Violence or an organized war against British will help India.

During Bose's exile in Europe he admired the military technology progression of Nazi Germany, particularly their military discipline. India was already divided into multiple factions; the divide between Hindu and Muslims was not only widening but being exploited by British. Bose thought a disciplined Indian central government ruling India for 15 to 20 years will help Indians forget their differences and bond for the greater good of the Indian society.

Many investigations suggest that Bose's fatal plan crash was fabricated by Japanese so as to keep Bose underground as the axis forces including Indian National Army (INA) led by Bose were defeated by the allied forces. Would you believe if I say even INA had betrayers. (I'm reminiscent of a saying of an anonymous origin that wars are lost not because of enemies but traitors).

I learnt from a podcast of an Indian statesman and parliamentarian, Dr Subramanian Swamy, where he made revelations that KGB killed Bose. Bose for some reason after the defeat in the second World War went to Russia. Russians apprehended him and informed the then Indian government, which was congress led by Nehru and Gandhi. On a secret letter from "them", Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose was executed by KGB.

Bose's popularity was always been a concern to Congress. Not only was Bose radical but his ideas as well. Congress needed an opportunity to sideline him. Allegedly Congress colluded with the British and made a secret pact that Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose is a war criminal and Bose must be handed over to the allied nations particularly the British if he ever returns to India.

While Bose worked in tandem with the axis forces (Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan), he was also equally critical of their ideologies. For instance when Indian students were not given the deserved respect, he wrote to a senior government official of the national socialist party in the strongest manner possible. There were many such instances. This is one of the examples that as far as Bose was concerned Indian independence was of paramount importance and ideologies really didn't not matter.

This post is not exhaustive. Because I have  derived certain knowledge from people who have carried out extensive research on Bose. Since today is India's 74th republic day, I managed to get some time from the field and have written this. Now, I have to resume running for living. There will be addendums.

Founding Fathers of The Nation!
Remembering the camaraderie existed between the revolutionary national freedom fighters Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose and Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar on the occasion of Bharath's 76th Independence Day.

Know Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar from Sivan:
Reportedly, Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose took Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar and introduced him to his mother that, "meet your youngest son of the South - a lion". This camaraderie went on to not only build Indian National Army but won Bharat's freedom.

Reportedly, in 1939, on Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose been expelled from Congress and forming All India Forward Bloc, announced Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar as Bose of South.

With the second world war nearing it's end, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose was apparently killed in a mysterious air crash in 1945. Reportedly, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar received a tip off that Nethaji was still alive and he met him in China.

In 1957, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar reportedly said in a public meeting held at Madurai that he who has strength can fight, he who has knowledge can rule, only he who has strength and knowledge can lead.  A leadership wisdom from Thevar.

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was critical of the ways of the Britishers: While the English believed that the honesty is the best policy, we
(Bharathiyas) have honesty as the way of our life, if something is a policy it can be adapted to situations. This exemplifies how devious the Britishers are!

The Bose of South, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar becoming the younger brother of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, a significant proportion of men and women of the "Mukkolathors" community joined Bose's Indian National Army (INA) and fought against British.

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was critical of the ways of the Britishers: While the English believed that the end justifies the means, we
Instinctively live by ethics, if anything can be done to achieve results, then it is barbaric. This exemplifies how devious the Britishers are!

While people were engaged in protesting against the British peacefully and violently, two were forbidden from even talking. Because their talking was causing more harm to the Britishers than both the peaceful and violent protests. They were Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak of North and Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar of South.

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar's eloquence in English and a regional language of Tamil earned him a national stage, which was kind of a rarity in the British Raj era. His stage speeches were not only furious but intelligent.

Reportedly, a young woman approached Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar and told him that she had fallen in love with him because of his charisma, especially attracted to his mustache. Thevar being an ardent follower of Swami Vivekanda, took the blame on him for being appearing attractive to that woman, shaved his mustache and remained a bachelor forever.

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar endured a difficult childhood of losing her mother when he was still an infant and had to legally fight against father for having recklessly spending the family's legacy properties. He was breast fed by a woman of Muslim faith when was just six months old. Consequently, Thevar became synonymous with equality. Therefore, he earned the epithet Chinnaiah.
Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar's political journey began when he was just 19. His political mentor Srinivasa Iyengar recognized Thevar's prospects of becoming a national leader and made him the Congress party. Thevar's metamorphosis not only as a national leader but a freedom fighter happened at a speech held in Coimbatore in 1935. That speech stood eloquent testimony to his oratorical skills and wisdom.

The Man Who Made Congress Win Tamilnadu State Elections without Campaigning.

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar was instrumental in Congress winning the Tamilnadu state elections held in 1937. At the request of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Thevar's mentor Srinivasa Iyengar persuaded Thevar to contest elections. Fearing Thevar's oratorical skills and popularity amongst the people for being the man of progression and equality, British government prohibited Thevar from speaking to the public. All Thevar did was stood up in the stages and welcomed the people with his hand folded signaling the gesture of "Vanakkam". Consequently, the votes poured in, with Congress wining 125 constituencies and forming the government.  In a subsequent public gathering held in Madurai to felicitate Thevar, Gandhi and Rajagopalachari credited Thevar being instrumental in the Congress's victory.

"Freedom Must Be BY Achievement Not By Adjustment"
Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar believed in the idea of complete independent India. Not only his methods were revolutionary, but his behavior was. He did not subscribe to the moderates of the Congress party that freedom can be achieved by "Ahimsa". When the All India Congress party presidential elections held, Thevar opposed the candidate supported by Gandhi and advocated the candidature of Bose. And, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose became the president.

"Nation is first, next only internationalism. "

Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar met Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose in 1928 at an Indian National Congress committee conference held in Madras. Thevar became fascinated by his determination and perseverance to free India from the British tyranny. Thevar didn't appreciate the Congress party's approach of the Independence movement. Thevar joined Subash's Forward Bloc leading from the Tamil Nadu's front and fought against the British. Forward Bloc was banned, and Thevar was arrested by the British in 1942. Thevar spent a total of 4000 days in the jail.
Reportedly, the real father of Bharath, Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose said, if I had ten young men like my friend Pasumpon Muthuramalainga Thevar, not only will i force British out of India, but transform the face of India forever.
