Inception of Space Age
Inception of Space Age
While the Americans were first to successfully land and bring back humans from Moon to Earth, Russians actually won the space race.
Sixty three years ago today, on October 4, 1957, Russians first successfully launched and inserted a human made object into Planet Earth's orbit. It was named, 'Sputnik', our planet's first artificial satellite. It beamed a distinct radio signal into Earth. Reportedly, thus the space age began at the height of the cold war between the United States and USSR.
The term Sputnik means "Fellow Traveller" in the Russian language, later it became synonymous with satellite.
