Introspection | Looper | Crime Time Travel

Looper (2012): A first of its kind, unique blend of time travel science fiction and gangster crime thriller.

Lopper (2012) is a unique blend of gangster crime thriller combined with time travel. As the name of the film suggests, the plot goes in a web of complex twists and ends well. 24 years from the present (2044, yes the film happens in future), time travel is invented(2074). Soon after its invention, its forbidden for unknown reasons. The highly sophisticated crime syndicates manage to get hold of the technology. Also, in the future, its almost impossible to dispose off a body. The intelligent bosses exploit the time travel machine.

Target is identified, and sent through the time travel machine to the past to specific location on an agreed upon time. An assassin called Looper waits for their package to arrive (target/human), blindfolded in a particular colored jacket, and silver packed on their back as payment for the murder they are going to commit. The moment, the package arrives, no questions asked, Lopper shoots, takes the silver, disposes off the body - who technically does not exist in the present. The person belonging to the future is killed in the present, and their identity is perfectly wiped off without any trace.

Intriguingly, the future selves of the loopers are nabbed by the most notorious gangster boss, called The Rainmaker, and sent back to the present selves of the loopers themselves. The loopers don't know that they are going to kill their own future self. Confusing, isn't? This is precisely why they are called Loopers. Because, they kill themselves and close the loop, leaving no trace of their existence in the future.

People from the future say that The Rainmaker is the most brutal gangster and he does not even appear to be a human. He is considered to be a creature. The story gets intertwined when the looper, Joe ( Joseph Gordon - Levitt) meets Old Joe ( Bruce Willis). Joe does not know that he has to close his loop but realises that his time has come, immediately looking at the target that is sent back without blindfolding. Before, Joe makes his mind to kill Old Joe (his future self), he is attacked by Old Joe with the reward (gold bar, packed on his back) and escapes. Obviously, the rainmaker gets angry and wants to kill both Joe (present) and Old Joe(future).
Another parallel plot of the story, which is of paramount importance gets unveiled. Old Joe's wife is killed by The Rainmaker in future. Therefore, Old Joe uses the opportunity of being present in the past to kill the young Rainmaker. He also has a lead to find him. The epic scene where Joe and Old Joe meet, the latter tells the former about his wife, Rainmaker, and his plans of killing young Rainmaker. In between Rainmaker's gang assault Joe and Old Joe, and both manage to escape. Joe takes cover from a deserted family of mother and son and latter realises that mother's ( Sara - Emily Blunt) son is the Rainmaker through an incident when a cop comes to nab Joe, the young rainmaker screams extremely like an explosion and blasts the cop and damages the house into pieces, and kills the cop. In meantime, old Joe kills all the possible leads of young rainmaker, and eventually comes to the place, where young Rainmaker, his mother (Sara) and Joe reside.
What happens next is very instinctively made. Joe realises that he cannot let his future self to kill a boy, the potential threat for the world in future (The Rainmaker), Sara (mother) would go to any extend to save her son, Old Joe would do whatever it takes to kill young rainmaker so that his wife's life can be saved. What does Joe (present self) do?

He closes the loop. Intriguing. Do watch the film to know how.

An intelligent yet entertaining film, written and directed by Rian Johnson, who directed Star Wars: Episode VIII, and also directed three episodes of Breaking Bad (2010 - 2013)
I highly recommend Looper and categorise it as must watch.
